Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden Great Lawn and Picnic Grove
Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden Great Lawn and Picnic Grove

3. Fromme Design and Ursa International facilitated Zoo and Botanical Garden Staff in developing concept designs for two major areas within the Old Zoo core. The Great Lawn included curving paths leading through large area of rolling turf punctuated with shade trees. The flexible use space hosts events of all sizes as well as groups of daily visitors. The Picnic Grove adds gracious wooden decks hovering amidst an existing grove of oaks. Refreshed restrooms, a new terrace and hearth, and enhanced service areas greatly enhance the visitor experience.

New gardens weave through the spaces enriching the landscape with exuberant displays of ornamental trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs adapted to Oklahoma City and its region. Plantings delight and inspire, augmenting the botanical garden functions of the Zoo throughout the year. Each garden area has a distinct design theme, color scheme, and plant palette. Fromme worked with Torre Design Consortium to realize the projects and took a lead on planting design. Anticipated opening is 2017.
