Longwood Gardens Estate Fruit House
Longwood Gardens Estate Fruit House Landscape

Tres Fromme led the design for this renovation of a Lord and Burnham greenhouse. The Fruit House reinterprets Longwood’s 1920s estate-era fruit production under glass, a major reason founder Pierre S. du Pont built the glass houses. Visitors explore a series of garden spaces showcasing the sculptural beauty and sensory characteristics of skillfully tended nectarines, figs, grapes, and citrus.

The spatial sequence intuitively guides people to engage the plants closely and in unexpected ways. Interpretive signs focus of bringing to life the du Pont-era uses and functions of the greenhouses and Mr. du Pont’s love of fresh fruit through historical photographs and descriptive text. Quotations from historic documents allow the gardeners and Mr. du Pont to share their story and bring the 1920s into the present.
