Linwood Cemetery Master Plan | Master Plan
The Historic Linwood Foundation selected 3. Fromme Design and Sitework Studios to facilitate a master planning process for the property in Columbus, Georgia. CSR provided guidance and input throughout the project. A critical goal was reinvigorating Linwood as a place of beauty, rejuvenation, and commemoration in the tradition of 19th Century cemeteries.
Master Plan enhancements focus on welcoming visitors and sharing residents' stories, especially the roles they played locally and nationally. Clarifying pedestrian circulation and wayfinding was essential. Proposed terraces along a central promenade create places for people to relax, gain their bearings, and discover interpretation.
An iconic new entrance and parking lead people to the Welcome Center in the historic Lummus Chapel (deconsecrated). Exuberant gardens surrounding the structure showcase Southern heirloom plants, leading to the proposed Sacred Grove Columbarium and reflecting pool. The original Gatehouse becomes a museum providing a deep look into the Cemetery’s history and visitor amenities. A small garden offers a place of refuge.
