Desert Botanical Garden Desert Terraces and Jan and Tom Lewis Desert Portal
The Desert Botanical Garden selected 3. Fromme Design in conjunction with Studio Outside to design two new high-profile garden "galleries." Fromme had previously facilitated and led the overall Core Trail Master Plan which identified these and other gardens. The new gardens draw people from the existing entry experience into the Core Desert Trail, the heart of the Garden’s displays, messages, collections, and visitor experience. The culmination of the spatial choreography is the Chiaroscuro Trellis, a functional piece of sculpture creating a new landmark and icon for the Garden.
Fromme was lead designer for all aspects of the Terraces and Portal and was particularly focused on collaborating with the Garden’s team to develop the planting design, a showcase of botanically rich desert plants from around the world. The design team included architects Twin Studios who developed Fromme’s concept for the Trellis. Both the Terraces and the Portal opened in January 2015.
